Additional Activities Near Paradise Cove Luau

When you select vacation accommodations on the grounds of Ko Olina, you can spend the day leading up to your Paradise Cove Luau excursion relaxing along the shores of one of the Ko Olina beach lagoons. With outer rock croppings to protect from large ocean waves, the waters in the lagoons offer a calm ocean oasis perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and stand up paddle boarding. Each of the four beaches on the resort grounds offers a perfect crescent of white sand curved up against aqua blue water. Strung together by a 1.5-mile paved path, you can beach hop among them or simply choose your favorite spot to settle in for the day. Also along this path are shops and restaurants, making a break from the beach to refuel or cool off an easy transition.

Elsewhere on the Ko Olina grounds are a world class golf course, numerous swimming pools, and accommodations that range from chic condos to sprawling private homes with all the charms of Hawaii’s plantation era architecture. With a full marina, beaches, golf course, and activities such as Paradise Cove Luau all at Ko Olina, it’s no wonder the accommodations at Ko Olina are highly desirable!

Leaving the Ko Olina grounds, you have the option of traveling north along the island’s western coastline toward the long stretches of sand found at beaches such as Makaha to the oceanside cliffs and trails of the remote Ka’ena Point State Park. Traveling east will take you to the nearby town of Kapolei, where you’ll find additional shopping and dining options convenient to Ko Olina. Approximately 30 minutes east are the bustling areas of downtown Honolulu and Waikiki, where the casual beach atmosphere blends with the cosmopolitan streets of city life, creating a dynamic place to spend an afternoon. Museums, shops, dining, and the famed Waikiki Beach can all be found here!

To secure accommodations away from the hustle and bustle of the city but still within easy reach, browse our Ko Olina rentals, which put you in great proximity for enjoying a luau at Paradise Cove!

Dolphin Snorkel Tour

Many dream of the ultimate experience of swimming in the natural environment with wild dolphins. On Ko Olina Ocean Adventures’ Oahu Dolphin Snorkel Tour that dream can come true. Our leeward shore is home to Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins year round. By the lucky chance that guests are willing to relax and passively view the dolphins, we are able to slip on our snorkels, glide into the water and see pods of 20, 40, and sometimes as many as 100 dolphins swimming beneath us.

The adventure does not stop there. Their aquatic safari takes you to a snorkel at two of their top fish and sea turtle sites. “Turtle Town” is a cleaning station for sea turtles where guests can see as many as a half a dozen sea turtles getting their shells cleaned. While “Sand Pukas” and “Electric Beach” are home to Oahu’s second largest living reef and “millions” of colorful tropical fish. Last but not least, whale sightings are an added bonus in the winter months (December to March), – which guests can hear with board hydrophones.

Ko Olina Ocean Adventures’ Dolphin Snorkel Tours in Oahu is for aquatic enthusiasts who are willing to be more wet than dry, see more sites than any other snorkel tour, and are open to be amazed by Hawaii’s special marine life.

Additional Sites at Pearl Harbor

The Pearl Harbor Historical Sites are comprised of the USS Arizona Memorial, the Battleship Missouri Memorial, the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park, and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum. Beyond your tour of the Arizona and Battleship Missouri Memorials, you may consider planning to spend additional time at the complex exploring the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park, as well as the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum.

The USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park provides an intriguing look into the role that submariners played in World War II. As one of only 15 World War II submarines that are left, boarding the USS Bowfin is a special experience to climb aboard a real submarine that has been painstakingly restored to reflect its original design. Stand in the torpedo rooms, exam the narrow quarters of the bunks, and explore the control room, officer quarters, galley, mess decks and engine rooms. With an audio that features commentary from the actual USS Bowfin crew, it’s not hard to imagine that you’ve stepped back in time!

From the sea to the air, the sites at Pearl Harbor allow visitors to examine the many fronts which were fought in World War II. Be sure to save time to explore the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum! A riveting, chronological retelling of World War II events begins in Hangar 37 and continues throughout the museum with a factual retelling and personal stories. Paired with displays that depict life in Hawaii in the 1940s, visitors also gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Hawaii culture and how the Islands were affected during the World War II era. Over fifty aircraft, along with personal effects, are on display in the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, ranging from rare World War II aircraft such as the Flying Tigers P-40 to modern aircraft that are still in service today. Exploring the museum is interesting for all ages, and kids will love the hands-on STEM exhibits available for exploration in The Raytheon Pavilion.

Exciting Oahu Attractions

While in downtown Honolulu visiting the Atlantis Submarine, there are many other attractions within a short distance that are worth exploring. Making the most of your day downtown by seeing some of Oahu’s other exciting sites!

The famed Waikiki Beach is practically right next door, stretching for two miles of golden sand across Oahu’s southern coast. Waikiki Beach is a happening place, and a stroll down its sandy shoreline or on the paved path that backs it is a great way to take it all in. The shoreline is packed with sunbathers, swimmers, boogie boarders, and surfers. In fact, the waves are often gentle here, so those interested in trying out surfing may consider taking a lesson in these famed waters.

At the opposite end of Waikiki Beach sits Waikiki Aquarium, and here you’ll find an up-close look at many of the ocean plants and animals that live in the surrounding Hawaiian waters. Particularly exciting is the Hawaiian Monk Seal exhibit, a creature that is found only in the Hawaiian Islands and is one of the most critically endangered species in the world. The aquarium’s Edge of the Reef exhibit introduces you to some of the fish that may be seen on a snorkeling excursion in Hawaii’s waters, perfect for those who are interested in viewing these creatures while remaining dry! Kids will also enjoy the hands-on element here.

Moving further southeast along Oahu’s coastline, you’ll reach Diamond Head State Monument, a dormant volcano that seems to loom over downtown Honolulu. The peak of Diamond Head offers stunning views of Honolulu and the Pacific for those who are able and willing to make the trek to the top! Formerly used by the military, you’ll find remnants of that use today with several old bunkers dotting the landscape. The Diamond Head hike is about 1.6 miles roundtrip. Although the length is rather short, almost the entire route is filled with stairs. Stairs, rocks, a narrow tunnel, and more stairs make up the terrain to the top. But when you’ve reached the summit, you’ll be rewarded with magnificent views! Be sure to bring along plenty of water for this hike.

After spending some time in Honolulu and Waikiki, it’s a nice breath of fresh air to retreat to the slower-paced western coast, where you can enjoy an idyllic view of Hawaii. Consider making Ko Olina your home base for your upcoming Oahu vacation!

Busses do not have any baggage storage areas available anywhere, and you are not allowed to store any bags on the seat beside you.
Technology Transportation (Uber / Lyft): This is fairly new to our city, and there are many laws that are constantly changing. If you already use Uber or Lyft you should inquire what current restrictions may affect you. The most current ruling that is being enforced is regarding your pick-up. Uber / Lyft drivers are not allowed to pick anyone up at the airport. If you are scheduling a ride you must order your pick-up in an area outside of the airport.
Airport Shuttle (SpeediShuttle): If you don’t mind sharing a ride with other exited vacationers you may consider jumping on SpeediShuttle. Cost is $15 per person, one way and may have multiple stops. Cost includes two bags, each additional bag is $8 each.

There are no “number of bags per person” restriction, in fact the number of bags are restricted to what fits in the trunk. If it does fit you will need to order a second cab and pay for it.
Sedan: Sedans make a luxury start of your vacation. For $175 per vehicle, one way, you can ensure a larger vehicle and a driver with a clean professional look.
Limousine: Start your vacation in style. Drivers will meet you at the gate, take you to baggage claim, help you with your luggage. At $220 per vehicle, one way, there’s nothing like starting your luxury vacation feeling like a rock star.

Naked Cow Dairy Farm

One of the sacrifices of living in our beautiful paradise of Hawaii is that goods such as dairy are often shipped from the mainland, across miles and miles of the Pacific Ocean—but you can find a wonderful exception to that rule at Naked Cow Dairy Farm, the only authentic Hawaiian dairy farm here on Oahu!

Natural Dairy Delights from a Farm with Quality and Compassion

Located in Waianae on the west side of Oahu, Naked Cow Dairy Farm has been a fixture of the community since 2007. Frustrated with the industrialized dairy industry, the founder Monique van der Stroom wanted to revive the natural production standards of small family dairy farms. In a time where hormone and antibiotic treatments are more common than ever, Naked Cow Dairy eschews that notion, and all of their animals are free of such treatments. Hence the name, Naked Cow—the way mother nature meant for them to be!

The cows that their dairy products come from are well loved, and you can taste the difference in their line of gourmet creamery butters, hand-crafted artisan cheeses, and freshly made yogurt. They only utilize feed that is grown in Hawaii, such as grass, sugar cane, pineapples, macadamia nuts, as well as a number of other naturally sourced feeds. As an added bonus, the farm is more sustainable for these practices, and they actively work to scale down their carbon footprint!

A cow on a farm on Hawaii A black and white photo of a cow

If you want to learn more and enjoy an exciting evening of tasting some of the finest cheeses on the island, you can take a mozzarella cheese making class offsite at the SALT at Our Kaka’ako shopping center. For two hours, you’ll be guided through the cheese-making process with a knowledgeable expert from start to finish, and you can even take your cheese home with you at the end! After the class concludes, you get to enjoy a glass of wine and sample some of Naked Cow’s best cheeses and can purchase a few if you’d like. It’s a fantastic way to glean more information about the island, and what it takes to produce sustainable dairy goods 2,000 miles in the middle of the Pacific. If you don’t have time for the cheese making class, you can still pick up some of their products at Whole Foods to enjoy in your gorgeous rental, or maybe even on the beach with a breath-taking view!

Papaoneone (Turtle) Beach

The Hawaiian name of this beach is Papaoneone Beach, but it is more commonly known as Turtle Beach, named for the Sea Turtles who like to feed on the seaweed that grows on the reef here. These Sea Turtles can frequently be seen in the early morning hours just offshore. Turtle Beach is a hidden gem on Oahu’s Leeward Coast. It is not among the most popular beaches on this side of the island, but that doesn’t mean that it’s a bad beach. To the contrary, the almost white sand contrasts amazingly with the azure blue water. The ocean looks especially turquoise here for some reason; more than on many other Oahu beaches. On the south end of the beach is Mauna Lahilahi, a small mountain which provides a scenic backdrop. Two condominiums, The Hawaiian Princess and Makaha Beach Cabanas, are also located on this side of the beach.  Checkout our rentals at The Hawaiian Princess if you’d like to spend a few days on this magnificent beach. It’s easy to miss Turtle Beach while driving along Oahu’s west shore as it is not visible from the road. There is a small dirt parking area along the road and three narrow public access walkways leading to the ocean. The only thing Turtle Beach lacks is shade. So if you plan to come here for the day, bring a beach umbrella. In the winter months, the surf can get very high here and this is when swimming is too dangerous. Even in the summer months there can be a strong shorebreak and currents on this beach. A sea cave, called Ulua cave, is located offshore and is a popular scuba diving location in the summer months, with a depth of around 80 feet. As always, be careful when going into the ocean and be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Turtle Beach Overview

  • Wide pocket of sand
  • Mauna Lahilahi provides a scenic backdrop on south end of the beach
  • Snorkeling can be good when the ocean is calm (usually in the summer months)
  • High surf and strong currents in the winter (November to February)
  • Steep shorebreak and strong undertow in nearshore waters (can occur year-round)
