Christmas Festivities on Oahu

Throughout the month of December, Honolulu’s city hall is alight with twinkling Christmas lights. More lights and displays can be enjoyed at the Festival of Lights Christmas Boat Parade, where decorated boats parade by the marina at Hawaii Kai Towne Center. Wander the festive streets and shops and take in a unique performance of The Nutcracker at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. Set in the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1858, you will experience Hawaii’s unique twist on the tale while still enjoying this famous Christmas classic. There are usually several Santa sightings on Oahu, so keep an eye out for him rowing his canoe ashore or strolling through town with his trademark suit, which in Hawaii is often altered with an aloha print shirt!

If you haven’t yet finished your Christmas shopping, there are many opportunities to do so on Oahu. Head to the sprawling Ala Moana shopping center for a vast array of stores or attend the Christmas Market at the Neal Blaisdell Expo Hall for locally made gifts.

All of the favorite activities that Hawaii is known for, such as beach and water activities, hiking, viewing marine life, and boat excursions, continue to be accessible, even on and around Christmas Day. Spend your Christmas morning swimming at a postcard-perfect beach, snorkeling along one of Oahu’s vibrant reefs or enjoying views of the coastline from a boat. In fact, Christmas and the surrounding winter months coincide with Hawaii’s whale watching season, making this an ideal time for a boat excursion. Boat trips that incorporate snorkeling, whale watching, dolphin sightings, and dining are a great way to enjoy multiple island activities all while soaking up beautiful views! Be sure to book an advance reservation, as many tours fill up quickly around the holidays.
