While you’ll be staying right on the beach in Makaha, it isn’t a Hawaii vacation if it doesn’t involve a little beach hopping. Explore some of the other beautiful west side beaches from your prime location in West Oahu! Driving north from Makaha will take you to the very end of the highway, where the road can no longer continue due to the rugged nature of the coastline. This rugged coastline is what provides the dramatic backdrop for the beach at Yokohama Bay, located at the end of the road. The combination of natural scenery and secluded location make this one of the most beautiful, serene beaches on the island. In fact, if you go during a weekday, there’s a chance you could be the only soul on the beach, a rarity on Oahu! On calmer days, you may find some boogie boarders enjoying the waves. However, on days with a larger swell, this beach is best left for enjoying the views and picnicking along the shoreline, as the shore break and current can be dangerous especially during winter months.
Just south of Makaha Beach Park is Aki’s Beach, a stretch of sand tucked along a tiny inlet in a residential area. While you probably won’t go out of your way just to enjoy the beach here, Aki’s Beach is a great place to views Hawaiian sea turtles. Honu frequently comes ashore here to rest and bathe in the sun, so you’ll have the opportunity to view these surprisingly large creatures up close. Be sure to keep at least a 10-foot distance as required by Hawaii law.
Travelers who would prefer to do more than sunbathe and sightsee along West Oahu’s beautiful beaches should consider booking a snorkel and dolphin sighting excursion, surf lesson, or stand-up paddleboarding lesson. Enjoying these activities from West Oahu will bring picturesque scenery and fewer crowds than what would be experienced from Honolulu. EO Wai’anae Tours is based in the west coast town of Wai’anae and offers boat tours that focus on enjoying the local sea life, as well as learning a little bit about the area’s history. You are guaranteed to see dolphins on this excursion, and you’re also likely to spot Hawaiian sea turtles and maybe even whales during the winter months. Snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding, and kayaking are all additional options that can be enjoyed on an EO Wai’anae Tours excursion!
